Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh

Mano Majra is a small village in the Punjab border. Sikhs and Muslims for whom the deputy Magistrate and government are synonymous live here like brothers without bothering in the least for freedom and partition. A dacoity and murder in the village starts building up tension in the atmosphere. Several arrests are made. In its wake comes the flare of riot during Partition of India in 1947. News of loogs, rapes and mass slaughter reaches the village. The tension mounts high when a ghost train arrives at the Mano Majra rail station with hundreds of corpses. Revenge instigates counterstrike. Juggut Singh, the budmash and Iqbal, the political activist, Malli dacoit and his gang are released on a calculated gamble from jail by Hukum Chand, the Deputy Magistrate.
