On Din Ani Din Khai

Sanjib Chattopadhyay’s satire makes us laugh and frees our heart rather than hurting us. His style seems satirical at times, but it is mainly dominated by his sense of humour. He picks up common everyday incidents from the life he sees in Kolkata. He builds up the atmosphere with short sentences, full of words we hear during family quarrel or on the street or in the office.

We are glad to record for our readers an almost-forgotten short novel, Din Ani Din Khai by Sanjib Chatopadhyay published in 1982. The novel is a satire on the office administration. It may also be considered a commentary on the ministers’ way of handling official matters.

The hero of this story is a newly-appointed junior officer in a ministry of West Bengal. Soon his boss discovers that he has the rare gift of writing good and appealing speeches. He can write intelligent speeches on anything, cottage industry or cultivation of honey. The minister is impressed, too. He starts liking him and he takes him to a TV show.

The minister is short-tempered and is losing his Assembly seat in the ensuing election. His whimsical moods and his anxiety about future ultimately destroy our hero. The novel ends all on a sudden, like a short story, just in a few sentences. It does not allow the reader to breathe a sigh of relief and recall what has actually happened so far.
