Selection of Rabindranath Tagore’s Poems in Bengali Braille

We are proud to emboss in Bengali Braille a selection of Rabindranath Tagore’s poems in Bengali Braille. The cover title of this Braille book of poems is “Nirbachita Rabindrakabita” in Bengali. A few days back we received request from a senior reader for a selection of Tagore’s poems for recitation. We agreed and immediately started selecting poems from Sanchayita. It was a difficult task. Sanchayita was the obvious choice for a good source. Sanchayita itself is a selection which has left out some of his well-known poems. So selecting from amongst poems in a selection meant further restriction on our choice.

There was yet another challenge. Our target was to pick up poems that can be recited, or read aloud. Tagore’s poems are widely read and frequently recited. Most of the poems in Sanchayita are available in the form of recitation in audio. We hope that it will cater to the tastes of readers of all ages. Maybe we shall emboss more of Tagore’s poems in future.

Lastly, we wanted to keep the book limited to a single Braille volume. This was the toughest part of the job. We finally succeeded in bringing out a selection of Tagore’s poems chosen from most of his major anthologies. This book includes 49 poems from 24 anthologies of Tagore’s poems. We have used Sanchayita published by Sahityam during Kolkata book Fair in January, 2003 for source. We have checked other sources where confusion arose.

This selection of Tagore’s poems is our fifth Braille publication of Rabindranath Tagore. Prior to this, we embossed Tagore’s Chokher Bali (novel), Jibansmriti (autobiography), Muktadhara and Raktakarabi (drama). It would not be out of place to mention here that Chokher Bali, released in Braille in January 2004, was the first novel in Bengali Braille.
