We regret to inform our members and well-wishers that Sukanti Majumdar, President of Blind Persons’ Association, breathed his last just a few hours ago, at 2:30 AM this morning. He was sixty-two. A student of Light House for the Blind and Narendrapur Ramkrishna Mission Blind Boys’ Academy, he passed out from school in 1976. He earned his master’s degree in International Relations from Jadabpur University in 1981.
He was profoundly influenced by his close association with two of his teachers, Shri Shibabrata Sengupta and Shri Kamalendu Bhattacharya at BBA. Both these teachers were then active organizers of Blind Persons’ Association. Sukanti Majumdar gradually became an active organizer himself and he has ever since worked for the Association. He became its General Secretary in 1986. Although he stepped down from his official position in 1989 to make room for new and junior members, he never took a single moment’s rest from his lifelong work for the organisation.
Sukanti Majumdar was a close follower of Shri Dipankar Roy. He played an active role in starting one of our blind schools, Tarun Memorial School for the Sightless at Shyamnagar in 1981. The Braille press the organisation has set up near Kolkata might not have been possible without his involvement. He travelled all over India for raising donation for the project. It was for him that we can maintain our friendship with many of our well-wishers in Delhi.
When BPA faced the current crisis following the sudden changes in terms and conditions of the Central Sector Braille Press Scheme last year, he took over the charge of the President on everybody’s request. He was unanimously elected as President of Blind Persons’ Association on January 12, 2020.
His unexpected death has created an enormous void for the organisation. He was also an active participant in other social movements. All of us are shocked at his untimely departure.
