Computer Training for the Visually Impaired

Blind Persons’ Association is proud to offer a comprehensive computer training programme specifically tailored to empower visually impaired students and young adults. Our mission is to equip participants with essential computer skills that are not only fundamental for education but also vital for various employment opportunities in today’s digital world. By mastering these skills, participants can access a wealth of e-books, online resources, and pursue diverse career paths that rely on computer-based tasks.

Our training programme is structured to provide hands-on experience with popular screen-reading software such as JAWS and NVDA, which are indispensable tools for visually impaired individuals. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to cover the following key areas:

  • Windows Basics: Understanding the operating system to efficiently navigate and manage files.
  • Screen Reader Orientation (JAWS and NVDA): Mastering the use of screen readers for seamless interaction with the computer interface.
  • Microsoft Word: Learning to create, edit, and format documents, essential for academic and professional use.
  • Microsoft Excel: Gaining proficiency in spreadsheet management, which is crucial for data organisation and analysis.
  • Internet Browsing: Developing the ability to search and retrieve information, a skill essential for research and staying informed.
  • Email: Acquiring the knowledge to communicate effectively via email, an indispensable tool for both personal and professional correspondence.

Eligibility and Programme Details

This programme is open to visually impaired students who are currently pursuing undergraduate degrees or preparing for competitive examinations. We take pride in our faculty, which includes experienced visually impaired teachers who bring their expertise and experience to the training sessions.

Participants will be enrolled under the Community Based Vocational Training (CBVT) programme, which is administered by the National Career Service Centre for Differently Abled (NCSC for DA) in Salt Lake, Kolkata. The NCSC operates under the Directorate General of Employment, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. Upon successful completion of the programme, trainees will be awarded a certificate from the NCSC. Additionally, scholarships are available through the Department of Mass Education, Government of West Bengal. However, please note that individuals who are recipients of other government scholarships are not eligible for this scholarship.
