About Dhulo Balir Jiban
Dhulo Balir Jiban is the story of two lives of Srijita and Bidhan. Srijita is ambitious and obtrusive. She has passed her childhood and teenage years under the protection of her father Animesh Basu. He is too possessive by nature and does not believe in the freedom of women. He resorted to illegal measure to punish Srijita’s school teacher when he wrote a letter to her. He did not allow Srijita to attend college seminars beyond the college hours. And finally, he wanted to get her married early without caring for her own will.
All this extra-protective care has foiled Srijita’s sense of freedom. It has only kindled in her a desire to revolt. Her mother was too weak to come out of her husband’s grip. So, Srijita had to fight alone, singlehanded, and as a revolt she marries Bidhan.
The author Prachet Gupta has told little of his hero, Bidhan. He is introvert and recluse, the exact opposite of Srijita. He does not want to impose his wishes on anyone. Srijita admits to her mother that this is the reason she has chosen Bidhan of all people. She needed someone for her husband who would never exert his influence on her.
There is no unpredictable climax in the end. Srijita is successful in her career. She is now a business executive of her company with a bright future ahead of her. On the other hand, Bidhan is going to end up in jail. For a man like Bidhan with no demand or desire of his own, imprisonment does not seem a very gloomy prospect. He is ready to accept it, otherwise he would have to sign a false statement and send one of his innocent colleagues to jail.
