About the Novel: Satkahon

We find it an immense pleasure to let our readers know that now we are ready with the much-awaited audio book, Saatkahon by Samaresh Majumdar. Recording of the book started way back in 2016. But due to some unavoidable circumstances it took us nearly three years to complete. This is a huge book, published in two parts. We have recorded the complete book containing two parts of Saatkahon. The combined edition was first published in June, 2009. We have recorded the third reprint of 2011.

Saatkahon is the story of a Bengali girl, Dipabali who is born around the time of India’s independence. Set up in the backdrop of the tea estates in Jalpaiguri district, a border district in North Bengal, we discover Dipabali absorbed in the celestial bliss of child’s play with is friends. The first few chapters of the novel would remind a Bengali reader Apu and Durga in search of the railway tracks.

Saatkahon soon reaches its turning point. Dipabali, although she is hardly ten years of age, is married to a dying boy. Her husband dies immediately after the marriage and she has to run away from her husband’s house, and also from the world of innocence. The rest of the novel is only fight and fight for her.

The forte of Saagtkahon lies in the lifelong struggle of its heroine for identity as a human-being. Dipabali does not want to become a teacher, the most common ambition of educated Bengali girls in post-Independence West Bengal. She wants to join the administrative service, she wants for herself the role of a leader, a role which will enable her to exercise real power over men and women equally.
